I wish I’d brought in more readers than I have, but it’s mostly been an uphill battle to recruit my online friends so they can freakin’ understand what I reference day to day. The people I followed on Tumblr have mostly already found or decided to read Homestuck - or were curious, and I gave them the tiniest extra push (by warning them that it will lull them into a false sense of security, then ramp up in awesomeness and take over their life) - allowing me to simply watch as the infection took its brutal hold.
For actually convincing valued friends to read Homestuck from scratch, especially online friends, my most effective weapon is the media trade. This is where you find something the other is extremely interested in / liked, such as an anime or book series you haven’t seen yourself, and offer to experience it in exchange for an equal reading of Homestuck on their part.
Then, you keep each other up to date on your progress and thoughts (usually online via IM or such), and both share experiences the other once loved in a mutually enjoyable manner. The only difference is that one of you walks away without a life. :)
