I really DON’T KNOW, but if I had to throw out a bullshit guess I’d have to say it was Esrever’s fault.
He’s a mod on the MSPA forums who frequented the main comic chat threads and such. One day, he abruptly changed his avatar to Applejack, and started favorite pony arguments all over the main threads (in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way). That was the first I’d ever heard of MLP:FIM. People were changing their avatars to other ponies and such in this “which is the best pony” war, and others were just mystified as to what the whole deal was.
Then, a week or two later, Esrever changed his avatar back to normal, and pretended it had never happened at all when asked. It was all quite intentionally hilarious.
That series of events, in particular, is what got me off my ass to see what all this pony business was. I’ve watched it all since, and it’s pretty cool.
I guess you could also say that Homestuck itself has a rather cute style + relentless lightheartedness about it, and that the forums have perpetuated the golden rule of “FRIENDSHIP IS PARAMOUNT” throughout much of the fanbase, even before MLP was a thing. The image manips and gifs and fanart, too… Our fandoms were extremely similar to begin with, even if the objects of their worship were two radically different things.
I guess it’s a culture intersect, really.
EDIT: Changed this to a photo/screencap so it’s rebloggable. HAHA AS IF ANYONE WOULD
